West Midlands Under *14’s* Championships
On Saturday 7th February, Cleobury braved the snow storms and headed for Thorns Communitity College, Quarry Bank, to take part in the West Mids Under 14’s Championships. A total of 18 players, 4 coaches and 1 very keen supporter travelled, armed with the knowledge that match experience and individual targets would be the goals for the day and not semi-finals and finals that some of the other teams craved. Only 2 players were the correct age (year 9) and most will enjoy 2 or 3 more attempts at trying to win the tournament. For most of the players, this was their first taste of Volleyball Competition.
The Boys first team played well in their opening fixtures, winning 2 drawing 2 and losing 1 match, just missing out on the main semi-finals. Instead they played off for 5th to 8th place, but lost their first match before easily overcoming their final opponents to secure a respectable 7th place finish from 18 teams. The boys second team struggled to begin with, but eventually won one of their 5 first round matches. This put them in a play off for 14th to 18th positions. They won 1, drew 1 and lost 2 matches to leave themselves in 16th place.
The Girls first team played some excellent competitive Volleyball and scared a few more established teams during the day. In the first round they won their first match before just losing out in their second match. In the second round, they did the same and came within 2 points of qualifying for the top pool (1st to 3rd place). However, they played off for 4th to 6th place and again won 1 and lost 1 and finished in an excellent 5th place out of 9 teams. The girls second team, who were all year sevens, struggled in the first 2 rounds, losing all 4 matches, but came very close to winning sets in a couple of matches. This placed them in the 7th to 9th place pool where they lost their first match, before finally recording their first win of the day over another young team, from Tettenhall. This left them in 8th place.
Overall, no medals won, but lots of satisfaction from the coaches in the way their teams performed and improved as the day progressed. Targets of having great fun and winning at least one match were achieved by all the teams, and all learnt more about what is expected in this stage of their development.
Well Done. An excellent day.
The teams were; Boys 1: Tom Wright, Jim Robinson, Dave Backhouse and Connor Phelps.
Boys 2: Kieran Martin, Tom Shirley, Theo Taylor, Josh Bate and Jack Brookes.
Girls 1: Emma Gallagher, Sarah Walker, Helen Barr, Rosie Millichamp and Steph Harper.
Girls 2: Siobhan Keegan, Kirsty Barnett, Analea Cooper and Dana Brookes.
Congratulations
Well done to Lyns & Tina who recently took a First Aid course & are now qualified to give mouth to mouth (watch out all you men!)
